Errorist is the musical alias of Miha Milek, a 29-year-old Slovenian biochemist-by-day and musician-by-night. In his compositions both acoustic and electronic instruments such as kalimba, saxonette, glockenspiel, melodica, various synthesizers and effects form the building blocks of unique musical soundscapes. During the recording process, errors in pitch, rhythm and sound are not discarded but used as sources of inspiration for new harmonies and arrangements. Elements of dark ambient, improvisation, noise and lo-fi aesthetics are combined with psychedelic melodies, glitchy beats and home-made percussion to produce something rather strange, perhaps even dissonant and ‘wrong’ to some ears but nevertheless essentially melodic.
His long-player debut ‘Hovercraft’ released in early 2010 on Slovenia’s experimental imprint Rx:Tx consists of waves of abstract cinematic recordings, psychedelic jazz and mutant ambient electronica. The album opens with two beautifully crafted ambient drone pieces, the positive, warm and pulsating ‘Talent shmalent’ and low-end abstractions of ‘Mark One’ which are joined by glimpses of tones and textures. Slow pulsating synth layers and catchy kalimba and melodica melodies build up in ‘Hover pad’ evolving into a psychedelic krauty groove only to finally disappear into a wall of reverberated noise. The fusion of analogue electronics and several acoustic instruments, most notably tuned percussion, is further explored in ‘Squeak’ and ‘Pigs’ as well as in ‘Overtones’, a recurring three-part theme of the album, sometimes reminiscent of the work of artists such as Xela, LJ Kruzer, or Jasper TX. Influences of cosmic synth music of the 70’s are obvious in ‘Glass Eyed’ and ‘Rocking chair’, perhaps the stand-out track of the album with its unexpected rhythmical key progressions and warm LFO-controlled melodies. In the final compositions, the music is surprisingly jazz-influenced but the main cinematic feeling persists; ‘Klubsky_rmx’ is an inventive psy-jazz remix of Slovenian jazz-funk-fusion outfit Klubsky, while the closing track ‘Smallfish’ is a smoky Alain Goraguer-like arrangement of vibraphone, saxonette, slow chords and ride cymbals.
‘Hovercraft’ is an exceptional album, recorded and sequenced with multi-instrumentalist live performance in mind ensuring its organic feel. It is constantly alternating between playful tunefulness and quirky abstractions, yet its structure, elements and associated emotional responses are all consistent, if very much dependent on the listener’s mood. What may sound as the infinite calmness on first listen could be perceived as haunting and eerie on the next. A space lullaby, a soundtrack for hovering far removed from the world, or the ambience of drowning in dark waters? Listen carefully.
